One of the best parts of a Lanikuhonua wedding is the privacy it offers without feeling too formal. You’re near the resort area of Ko Olina, but the venue feels separate and quiet. R and G had a group of thirty people in their wedding party, and the lawn had plenty of space to photograph everyone without feeling tight or limited on space for everyone.

When I photograph weddings here, I typically recommend getting ready at the Four Seasons Resort next door for convenience, however for this day we started off in Waikiki. The soft, clean light in the rooms and on the balconies makes a huge difference for detail photos and group moments. For R and G’s day, I had the bridesmaids stand in the shaded part of the balcony so their faces were evenly lit. Shade on the side of the building keeps the light soft and flattering, and it avoids the harsh highlights that happen when the sun hits straight on.

First Look Wedding Photos

For the first look, I like finding a location that offers a little bit more privacy and room. The staircase area at the Moana Surfrider had a layered background without distracting from the moment itself. It also lets you step away from guests and vendors so you can take in the moment without getting interrupted or having everyone see you before the ceremony.

The indoor light has a brightness to it midday and I personally love how it illuminates the beginning moments of a wedding day. Having a private first look gives you that quiet moment where you can actually feel the day instead of rushing through the process.

Once we’ve had a few quiet minutes together, we can roll right into wedding party photos while the light is still soft and easy to work with. It keeps the whole flow feeling relaxed and not rushed.

Ceremony on the Lower Oceanfront Lawn

Most couples time their ceremony to start about two hours before sunset, and this spot was made for it! When you face the ocean, the view is clean and wide open, and the sun ends up behind your guests, which keeps everyone comfortable. It’s one of those setups that doesn’t need a lot to feel special, the water, the breeze, the open sky, its all more than enough.

Cocktail Hour on the Upper Lawn

While you’re off doing family photos, the upper lawn is a great spot for guests to relax and enjoy the view. There’s usually a little more breeze up there, which helps keep things comfortable, especially if the sun is still out. If you’ve got a bigger wedding party or guest list like R and G did, the extra space makes it easy for everyone to mingle without it ever feeling crowded. Sunset at Lanikuhonua is one of my favorite parts of the day. The light softens up, the heat drops off, and you get a really simple window to step away for a few minutes together.

I personally love giving couples a few quiet minutes together at sunset. It’s one of the calmest parts of the day and lets you take a moment to soak it all in together. You don’t need a long photoshoot here. Ten minutes is usually more than enough. The beach is right next to the lawn, so it’s an easy walk, and by that point your guests are usually sitting down to eat, you won’t miss anything important!

It’s less about squeezing in more photos and more about giving the two of you a breather. A short pause, a few photos that feel natural, and a second to take it all in together. That’s really all you need.

Favorite Moments From R and G’s Day

R and G’s Lanikuhonua wedding was one of those days that just felt full, full of energy, people they loved, and those little in-between moments that stick with you. They had a big wedding party, thirty people total, but it never felt rushed or chaotic. It actually made the whole day more fun.

One of my favorite parts was when the bridesmaids did a first look with R. None of them had seen her dress yet, and the reactions were everything. It set such a sweet tone for the morning, and you could tell how close everyone was.

Before the ceremony, G’s mom gave him his dad’s old watch, she’d had it restored as a surprise. It was one of those quiet, emotional moments that said so much without anyone needing to say a word. These are the things I love documenting most, the ones you can’t plan, but you’ll always want to remember.

Their ceremony was officiated by a close friend, which made it all feel super personal. During the reception, R’s dad fully took over the dance floor in the best way. Every photo of him dancing is just pure joy.

And of course, they stepped away for a few minutes at sunset. The beach right next to the venue makes it easy, and the light was perfect, soft, natural, and just enough time to breathe together before heading back to the party.
